What Width Should Curtains Be? Curtain Fullness Guide
What width should curtains be for a soft, full, and balanced look? The answer depends on your curtain track width, curtain style, fabric type, and fullness ratio.
For custom curtains, the finished curtain coverage is usually based on the track or pole width. However, the actual fabric used is wider than the track because extra fabric is needed to create folds and fullness.
Should Curtains Be the Same Width as the Window?
Curtains should usually be wider than the window itself. If the curtain only matches the glass width, it may look too flat and may not provide enough side coverage for privacy and light control.
For a better result, measure the full curtain track or pole width. If you do not have a track yet, decide whether you want the curtain to cover only the window area or a wider wall section.
What Is Curtain Fullness?
Curtain fullness means how much extra fabric is used compared with the track width. More fullness creates softer folds and a more elegant drape.
For example, if your curtain track is 200 cm wide and the fullness is 2.2x, the fabric width used before pleating is about 440 cm.
Common Fullness Ratios: 1.8x, 2.2x, 2.5x and 3.0x
Different fullness ratios create different looks:
- 1.8x fullness: Simple and lighter look
- 2.2x fullness: Soft, full, and balanced look
- 2.5x fullness: Fuller look, often suitable for S-fold or wave curtains
- 3.0x fullness: Very full and luxurious look, often used for sheer curtains
Why Lemonho Recommends 2.2x Fullness
At Lemonho, many custom curtains are calculated with around 2.2x fullness. This gives the curtain a fuller appearance without making it too heavy or bulky.
For most homes, 2.2x fullness is a practical choice because it balances fabric use, visual softness, privacy, and cost.
Example in Centimetres: 200 cm Track × 2.2 = 440 cm Fabric
If your curtain track is 200 cm wide and you choose 2.2x fullness:
200 cm × 2.2 = 440 cm fabric width
This means the fabric width before pleating is around 440 cm. The finished curtain will still fit the 200 cm track, but the extra fabric creates the folds.
Example in Inches: 80 Inches Track × 2.2 = 176 Inches Fabric
If your curtain track is 80 inches wide and you choose 2.2x fullness:
80 inches × 2.2 = 176 inches fabric width
This is a simple way to estimate how wide the curtain fabric needs to be before making and pleating.
Which Fullness Ratio Is Best for Sheer Curtains?
Sheer curtains usually look better with more fullness because the fabric is lighter and more transparent.
For sheer curtains, 2.2x to 3.0x fullness can create a softer and more layered look. A higher fullness can also improve privacy while still allowing natural light through.
Which Fullness Ratio Is Best for Blackout Curtains?
Blackout curtains are usually heavier than sheer curtains, so they do not always need very high fullness.
For many blackout curtains, 2.0x to 2.2x fullness is enough to create a full look while keeping the curtain practical and easy to use.
