How to Measure Curtain Width Correctly for Custom Curtains
Measuring curtain width correctly is the first step when ordering custom curtains. The right width helps your curtains cover the window properly, create soft folds, and look balanced when opened or closed.
For custom curtains, the most important measurement is usually the curtain track or pole width, not just the window glass width. If the width is measured incorrectly, the curtains may look too narrow, too flat, or may not provide enough light control and privacy.
Why Curtain Width Measurement Matters
Curtain width affects the final look, fabric use, and price of your custom curtains.
- Better window coverage
- Softer and fuller folds
- Improved privacy and light control
- More accurate custom curtain pricing
- A cleaner finished look
For made-to-measure curtains, width is also connected to the fullness ratio. This means the actual fabric used is usually wider than the curtain track itself.
Window Width vs Track Width: What Should You Measure?
If you already have a curtain track or pole, measure the full width from one end to the other. This is usually the most accurate measurement for custom curtains.
If you do not have a track yet, measure the window width first, then decide how far the curtain should extend beyond the window on both sides.
For better coverage, the curtain track is usually wider than the window frame. This allows the curtains to cover the window fully and stack more neatly when opened.

How to Measure Curtain Width Step by Step
First, decide whether your curtains will cover only the window area or a wider wall section.
Next, measure the full width of the existing track or the planned track position. Measure from the left end to the right end.
If you are planning a new curtain track, mark the starting and ending points before measuring. This helps you avoid measuring only the window glass by mistake.
Finally, write down the exact width in centimetres or inches. When requesting a quote, you can also provide both the window width and planned track width if you are unsure.
Full-Wall Curtains vs Window-Only Curtains
Window-only curtains cover the window area and usually extend slightly beyond the frame. This is a practical option for bedrooms, smaller rooms, and simple installations.
Full-wall curtains cover a larger wall section, sometimes from corner to corner. This creates a cleaner and more elegant look, especially for living rooms, bedrooms, and sliding doors.
Full-wall curtains usually need more fabric because the track is wider, but they can make the room feel more complete and visually balanced.
How Fullness Ratio Affects Fabric Width
The width you measure is the track width, but the actual fabric width is usually larger. This is because curtains need extra fabric to create folds.
At Lemonho, many custom curtains are calculated with around 2.2x fullness for a soft and full look.
Example:
Track width: 200 cm
Fullness ratio: 2.2x
200 cm × 2.2 = 440 cm fabric width
This means a 200 cm curtain track may require about 440 cm of fabric width before pleating and sewing.
For S-fold or wave-style curtains, the fullness ratio may be around 2.4x–2.5x depending on the heading style and final look.
You can also use our curtain pricing calculator to estimate how width, height, and fullness may affect the final price.
Common Curtain Width Measuring Mistakes
One common mistake is measuring only the glass width. This can make the curtains too narrow and reduce privacy.
Another mistake is forgetting side coverage. If the curtain does not extend beyond the window frame, light may leak from the sides.
Some customers also confuse track width with fabric width. The track width is the finished coverage width, while the fabric width is usually larger because of the fullness ratio.
For wide windows or sliding doors, it is also important to consider where the curtains will stack when opened.
